Home delivery of Silver Salisbury 2020 afternoon teas

175 older people in Salisbury had a visit from a volunteer delivering afternoon tea on Silver Sunday October 4th, the first Sunday following International Older People’s Day.  This initiative by Irene Kohler Salisbury Older people’s Champion, celebrated Silver Sunday by taking afternoon tea to older people unable to get out and about or still isolating or shielding. The volunteers who delivered the teas said it was wonderful to see the pleasure on people’s faces when they answered the door finding someone on their doorstep with a delivery that was a treat, rather than essential shopping or prescription delivery. The teas were packed at the Pantry Partnership base in Victoria Park. Our photo shows Irene and Hayley organising the delivery. Irene was interviewed by BBC Wiltshire, you can hear her at about 2hrs 41 mins here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p08s5xlb

As well as older people at home receiving a Silver Salisbury tea, Wessex Care Homes organised Silver Sunday teas in their five care homes in Salisbury with special entertainment by Craig of Engaging Activities

Irene said: “Silver Sunday was such a great day because of the enthusiasm and commitment of all the volunteers from different walks of life all over Salisbury.  They told us about neighbours who lived alone, they baked scones and cakes, packed the tea gift bags and delivered to all parts of the city by car, and in spite of the horrendous weather on foot and by bike including by  Benji of Co-delivery with his brand new Cargo bike.”

Irene hopes that this initiative to celebrate International Older People’s Day will be just the lift that older people need to fortify them to get through the next few weeks with news from around the country bringing threats of a repeat lockdown. Irene says that it is clear from immediate feedback from recipients and volunteers that even if we can revert to our full Silver Salisbury programme of events next year, taking Silver Sunday tea to people at home must be a firm fixture on future Silver Salisbury programme of events.

Thank you to the City Council team based on Bemerton Heath, Contact the Elderly, The Pantry Partnership, the Silver Salisbury Planning Group and Safer and Supportive Salisbury Group, who all contributed to the event and a very special thank you to Hayley Alton, who was behind the successful organisation and smooth delivery.

Supporting each other during lockdown: Silver Salisbury film

October 1st is International Older People’s Day which in Salisbury we have previously celebrated with a range of events: as that is currently not possible, we wanted to mark the occasion differently and that is how this film came about.

Made by young film maker Joseph Walker, the film was inspired by Salisbury’s Older People’s Champion Irene Kohler to record and celebrate the experiences of older people during lockdown, reflecting the many ways older people have contributed to the community. Financed by a small grant from Salisbury Area Board supplemented by private donation, the film will be launched on Thursday 1st October International Older People's Day

Irene says  “Of course many older people have needed support but we think the film shows the diversity of the community of older people in Salisbury as well as the diverse ways in which people have contributed, from running a convenience shop supporting local older people, ensuring the planting Victoria Park lifts people’s mood as they exercise, helping neighbours with shopping and prescription collection, coming together in street groups, Muslim women giving each other support, gardeners and allotment holders bringing produce to the Harnham Harvest table, and much more…….”   See the film, download it now on this website.

The work of the Silver Salisbury Group is supported by SaSS Safer and Supportive Salisbury, Marc Read, Salisbury Community Engagement Manager and the Salisbury Area Board.  If this film motivates you to volunteer to support others should we be faced with the next spike, then please email silver.salisbury@outlook.com

Support and Wellbeing

FEEDING SALISBURY

Are you concerned about getting supplies through a cold winter?

The Pantry Partnership collects ‘too good to waste’ surplus food from a variety of local food businesses and creates meals and food bags for individuals in need.

If you, or someone you know, is elderly, disabled, shielding and/or isolating and would benefit from this service of a stopgap of fresh fruit and veg and/or home-cooked meals, then please get in touch on 01722 632 455 or via email at info@thepantrypartnership.org. We have no “referral criteria” so please do get in touch if you’d like to know more.

We are able to offer this service free or subsidised to individuals with thanks to funding from WRAP and Defra, as well as the Coronavirus Community Support Fund, distributed by The National Lottery Community Fund; with thanks also to the Government for making this possible.

A typical delivery would contain frozen meals to cook through and a selection of fresh produce, as our food is all from donated surplus we cannot guarantee what these items will be from delivery to delivery but we hope it may just help a little as a service for people who would benefit from a few extra items or meals throughout the winter.
